FROM THE GREAT DEPRESSION … TO THE TECHNOLOGICAL FRONTIER
William A. Nicolozakes, president of Nicolozakes Trucking & Construction, Inc., believes the combination of technologically-advanced cranes from Link-Belt and dependable support from Columbus Equipment Company gives his family’s Cambridge, Ohio-based Company a competitive edge.
“The flexibility of Link-Belt products is invaluable. We perform many services for many different industries. One day we’re at a factory, the next we’re putting up a cell tower,” he said. The Company owns four Link-Belt cranes: ATC-3210, HTC-3140LB, RTC-8080 Series II and HTC-86110.
“We bought the ATC-3210 for its chart. Our operations in manufacturing and oil and gas require the heavy lift capacity. The chart and the crane’s reach have also allowed us to expand the services we offer telecom customers.”
Meanwhile, “the HTC-86110 has been a champ. The ability to move it with the boom in the cradle allows us to obtain permits a lot quicker which enables us to respond to customers’ needs sooner. We can respond very rapidly to a crane need, many times sending the crane out the same day,” he added.
One of the biggest game-changers for us has been the integration of information about Link-Belt cranes into 3D Lift Plan, a computerized lift-planning software that’s available to Link-Belt owners. “3D Lift Plan is great. It gives customers a virtual but realistic view of how the job should go,” said John Nicolozakes, VP of Operations/EH&S.
Photos taken of a site can be integrated into the program, allowing the user to create presentations showing the actual work site and building, plus images of the crane making the pick.
“The whole concept of utilizing 3D Lift Plan software has supercharged our pre-planning. Spending more time on pre-planning makes the field time more efficient,” he added. “Sometimes the pre-planning shows we can use a smaller crane, making the job more efficient which saves our customers time and money. It allows us to offer customers safe cost-effective and efficient solutions. That gives you credibility with the customers and their safety departments,” John said. “Everyone is clear what the plan is, adding a level of professionalism to the lift.”
William has also been impressed by how customer-focused Link-Belt is. “I was thrilled with how Link-Belt and Columbus Equipment Company helped us participate in the process of how we build our cranes.” For instance, when he mentioned the Company does a lot of night work.

Link-Belt worked with him to find the best LED lighting configuration for the 86110.
“The end product demonstrates Link-Belt’s attention to detail,” he added. “Safety railings, camera systems, retractable catwalks, the stow-and-go system, telemetrics” are all features that add a lot of value for us which translates into safer, more efficient services for our customers.

Link-Belt recently approached Nicolozakes Trucking to ask about their experiences with various cranes and request input about what they want to see in new models. “I don’t think we’ve ever had another equipment manufacturer ask for input,” William said.
The other important part of the equation is support from Columbus Equipment Company and Link-Belt. While Nicolozakes has staff mechanics, “Columbus Equipment Company’s services help us multiply our abilities,” noted Dean Nicolozakes, Secretary-Treasurer of the multi-generation, family-owned business.
“Our schedule is very robust and full. We’re busy,” William Nicolozakes said. “When there’s a hiccup, Columbus Equipment Company is here the next morning. We know there are constraints with labor and supplies, but from our perspective, both Link-Belt and Columbus Equipment have managed the supply chain constraints as well as or better than anyone.”
Columbus Equipment Company’s branch network provides quick response time, he said. “In this age of world turmoil, we have a competitive edge knowing that parts and service are close and that Link-Belt manufactures most everything just 271 miles away in Lexington. The collaboration between Link-Belt and Columbus Equipment in getting us needed parts to minimize downtime has been exceptional.”
Both the manufacturer and the dealership “display an attitude of ‘we’re here to help’ when there’s a problem,” Dean Nicolozakes added.
Link-Belt guarantees parts availability, even if they have to take the part off a machine on the production line, said Bob Weber, head of Columbus Equipment Company’s Lift Division. Some of Weber’s customers, including Nicolozakes Trucking, have received parts under the policy.
Nicolozakes Trucking & Construction, Inc. specializes in mobile crane service, industrial rigging, machinery moving and installation, heavy hauling, excavation, and grading. The heavy-haul group offers in-house permitting, specialty trailers and secure storage facilities for construction, telecom, energy and manufacturing equipment. The excavation division provides site development services including access roads, building pads, site utilities, horizontal boring, rock trenching and concrete coring.
While Nicolozakes Trucking traces its roots to The Great Depression, the Company has embraced new technology to be a 21st century leader — backed by support from Columbus Equipment Company and Link-Belt.
